New editions of floor rugs, wallhangings, and fabrics by Josef and Anni Albers at Somerset House, London

Form through Colour: Josef Albers, Anni Albers and Gary Hume is a summer exhibition coordinated by Lucy Weber, whose portfolio at the Josef and Anni Albers Foundation includes special projects and licensing. Contemporary rug and fabric company Christopher Farr has collaborated with the Albers Foundation and British Artist Gary Hume, to create new, limited-edition collections around each of the artists' signature series.

In the beautiful light-filled and airy spaces of historic Somerset House, a major arts and cultural centre in the heart of London along the Thames Embankment, over twenty hand-crafted rugs, tapestries and fabric installations are on show for the first time. The exhibition offers visitors the chance to see textile art based on the original designs of three complementary colorists from the Bauhaus to Britart eras alongside each other.

Anni Albers's works are a statement of textiles as art and the new Christopher Farr Cloth collection will inspire a reconsideration of the form in a large-scale fabric installation that features five of her most iconic designs. They can be seen on lively drapery materials hanging kaleidoscopically from the ceiling as well as in vibrant upholsteries on a wooden sofa and a streamlined modern bench. Six limited-edition hand knotted rugs based on original Anni Albers designs complete the fabric installation.

Each of the series shows a simple but staggering use of color and reveals how Josef and Anni Albers's design principles work across a range of mediums. According to Nicholas Fox Weber, "The wall hangings based on Josef Albers's Homage to the Square paintings and the large rugs reproducing Anni's designs are of exemplary quality, and one can imagine them being used and enjoyed all over the world."

Visitors will also be able to experiment with Albers's color principles and teachings by exploring the Interaction of Color iPad App, recently launched by Yale University Press. The App's innovative interactive features allow users to test their own color perceptions and create their personal color studies.

A feature of the exhibition is the rich material, shown in the four free-standing vitrines housing materials selected from the extensive archives of The Josef and Anni Albers Foundation. These include textile samples, photographs, and documents such as letters to and from the Alberses and wonderful early magazine and newspaper articles that have rarely been shown in public.

The collections are being launched at Somerset House, offering the first opportunity for order. Each of the rugs is hand-tufted, made of 100% wool and are produced in limited editions of ten. A selection of small hand-tufted rugs in much larger editions, cushions, fabrics and other soft furnishings featuring the designs exhibited are available for purchase.
