Josef used to say that in mathematics and science one plus one equals two, but in art one plus one can equal three or more. With minimal means for maximum effect, he used straight lines to produce impossible forms: flat planes that we see both from above and from below; forms that appear to open in one direction and then in another, shapes that transform themselves before our eyes.
